A patient with stab injuries, who was said to be well enough to be taken home by on-duty doctors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, died from excessive bleeding at his residence in Kadamtali of the capital.

The deceased was Mamun Fakir, 20, a worker of a local metal melting factory.

Mamun was rushed to DMCH after he was stabbed by muggers on his hips around 10:30pm Monday.

His family members alleged that the doctors at the emergency unit released him instead of admitting him, saying Mamum was okay.

"The doctors gave him blood, closed the wounds and asked us to come back to the hospital after 14 days to remove the stitches," the victim's brother-in-law Jakir Hossain told The Daily Star.

"Soon after we took him home around 5:00am, Mamun began bleeding," said Abdur Razzak Fakir, Mamun's father.

When Mamun was rushed back to DMCH around 7:30am, he was declared dead. Morgue sources said he died from blood loss.

"We repeatedly requested the on-duty doctors to admit Mamun, but they refused to admit him," Jakir alleged. He added that Mamun died due to the negligence and carelessness of the hospital.

KM Riaz Morshed, resident surgeon of the emergency unit, said the on-duty doctors told him that they released the victim after finding him out of danger.

He, however, admitted that Mamun should have been admitted and treated under observation.

He said they would investigate the incident.
