Bangladesh Chhatra Union, a left leaning student organisation, yesterday launched a self-defence training programme for women at Dhaka University.

Under the banner of "Pritilata Brigade", the inaugural ceremony was held in front of the Raju sculpture on the campus.

Bangladesh Taekwondo Federation is providing technical assistance to the programme where the women are basically being trained in martial art.

Jesmin Akter, taekwondo black belt holder, conducted the opening session participated by 17 persons.

The programme, which will be held on every Friday morning on the spot, is open to all women, said Chhatra Union President and the brigade chief Lucky Akter.

As the law enforcers and government are failing to ensure security for women, they took the programme, said Lucky.

Earlier on April 2, the group announced launching the programme from a procession carrying sticks demanding trial of all murderers and rapists of women, including of Sohagi Jahan Tonu.
