Rescue abducted girl Snigdha within 30 days

The High Court yesterday directed the government to rescue abducted girl Snigdha Deb Jayee and produce her before it within 30 days.

In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon the government to explain why its inaction to rescue Snighda in spite of relevant information about her abduction should not be declared illegal.

Petitioner's lawyer Subrata Chowdhury told The Daily Star that Snigdha, four year old daughter of Shraboni Deb in Sylhet, was kidnapped from Sylhet on July 21, 2013.

After an abduction case filed in Sylhet, police have arrested three accused--Shankar Dham, Anita Bhattachariya and Md Rabiul Islam in this connection, he said.

Subrata said Rabiul made a confessional statement before a magistrate, saying that he saw Shankar and Anita to cross a river with Snigdha and the two gave him (Rabiul) Tk 7,000 so that he did not disclose it.

Although information about Snigdha's abduction is available, police are yet to rescue Snigdha, the counsel added.

The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman fixed April 12 for passing further order on this issue.

The HC came up with the order and rule following the writ petition filed by Snigdha's mother Shraboni Dev seeking direction on the government to rescue her daughter.

Home secretary, inspector general of police, commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, deputy commissioner of Sylhet, and officer-in-charge of its Kotwali Police Station and the three accused have been made respondents to the rule.
