Petition challenges DU's bar on admission test retake

Guardians of 26 aspirants yesterday petitioned the Supreme Court to direct Dhaka University's administration so that it allows candidates, who passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations last year, to take the admission test again this year.

The four-member bench of SC's Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed August 16 for hearing the petition.

The petition challenges a High Court verdict that sustained the university's policy of allowing candidates to take the entrance examination only once.

The rules came into force last year.

Subrata Chowdhury, the petitioners' counsel, told The Daily Star that the DU authorities did not issue any notice to the admission seekers before taking the decision last year.

Because of the new policy, the students who passed HSC exams in 2014 will be deprived of sitting for the admission test this year.

The HC on July 8 upheld DU's decision, taken on October 15 last year.
