Battery-run Rickshaws

Owners in Ctg want one more month to wrap business

Responding to the latest government move to remove illegal battery-run rickshaws from Chittagong City, the owners and drivers yesterday demanded that the authorities soon register the vehicles and formulate a separate policy for the vehicles.

On Thursday, Chittagong Metropolitan Police directed the rickshaw owners to remove batteries from their vehicles or to take those off the roads by Sunday and also warned them of legal actions if the order was not followed.

At a press conference at Chittagong Press Club, the owners and drivers, under the banner of Chattagram Battery Chalito Auto Rickshaw Chalak-Malik Samity, also demanded that the time limit be extended by one month so that they would be able to appeal to the High Court for extending its stay on any action against such vehicles.

Yesterday, presence of battery-run rickshaws in major city roads was almost nil.
