One killed, 10 injured in Dhamrai bridge collapse

A construction worker was killed and 10 others were injured as an under-construction bridge, connecting two three-storied garment factory buildings of Rising Group, collapsed at Balitha Dhamrai, outside the capital, around 8:00am yesterday.

The deceased was Shamsur Rahman Shujon, 20.

The bridge, around 25 feet long and 10 feet wide, collapsed suddenly when the labourers were working on the bridge, said witnesses, adding that the workers were hurrying to complete their work before Eid-ul-Azha which might have caused the accident.

Fire fighters and police conducted rescue operation till 12:00noon and rushed the injured to different hospitals in Savar, Dhamrai and Dhaka. Four of the injured who are in critical condition are undergoing treatment at Apollo, Enam and Dhaka medical college hospitals.

The deceased will get Tk 20,000 from the district administration, Tk 2 lakh from the garment factory owner and Tk 1 lakh from the contractor.
