Police could not arrest anyone till yesterday in connection with Jubo League activist Badal murder in Chittagong on Tuesday.

Mehedi Hasan Badal, 40, was also president of Chittagong Polytechnic Institute unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League in 1990s, said Moin Shahrier, organising secretary of city unit of BCL.

He was shot dead by unknown miscreants near his Sher Shah residence in the city around Tuesday night.

Police suspect that it was a "preplanned" murder over "previous enmity" with his rivals.

Five to seven culprits conducted the killing mission, said Paritosh Ghosh, deputy commissioner (north zone) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, adding that one of them shot him from a very close range.

Badal and two of his followers walked past them who were standing there in dark, Paritosh quoted the two as saying.

Shortly, Badal's associates heard a sound of firing and saw him falling onto the ground, he said, adding that the gangsters immediately fled the scene.
