Mirza Abbas sent to jail on surrender

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas was sent to jail yesterday after his surrender at two Dhaka courts seeking bail in three violence and graft cases.

He, however, secured bail in two other arson cases filed with Mirpur Police Station in June 2010.

Of the three cases, Abbas is an accused in one case filed with Paltan police on December 29 of 2014 and another filed with Motijheel police on January 4 last year on charges of vandalising and setting fire to vehicles.

During the yesterday's hearing, Abbas' lawyer told the court that he had been suffering from different ailments, adding that he could not appear before the court to seek bail in the cases.

Moreover, Abbas told the court he was never absconding and he had been staying at home.

CORRUPTION CASE

Judge Md Aminul Haque of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka rejected Abbas' bail and sent to jail after his surrender in a graft case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission.

The court on February 24 last year issued an arrest warrant against Abbas and four others in the same case as they were shown fugitive.
