HC upholds death for man for killing wife in Gopalganj

The High Court yesterday upheld the death sentence of one Tuhin Kazi for killing his wife for dowry in Gopalganj eight years ago.

Tuhin, 35, a businessman tied the mouth of his wife Mina Sultana, 21, and hacked her to death at Mani Khar village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila around 9:30pm on August 10, 2007, according to the prosecution.

The following day, Mina's father Alamgir Shikdar filed a murder case with Gopalganj Police Station against Tuhin and his mother Katu Bibi.

On January 27, 2011, the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Gopalganj sentenced Tuhin to death.

The tribunal, however, acquitted Katu Bibi from the murder charge.

Yesterday, the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain affirmed the Gopalganj court verdict after hearing the death reference of the case and the appeal filed by the convict Tuhin.

Deputy Attorney General Shaikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir told The Daily Star that the HC upheld the death penalty of Tuhin Kazi, as the allegation brought against him of killing his wife was proved beyond reasonable doubt. He said Tuhin's 10-year-old son Akash, who is the only witness of the crime, had made statement before the trial court saying that he awoke hearing groaning of his mother. Then he saw that his father was stabbing his mother with a kitchen knife.

The body bore 21 marks of injury, said the DAG.

Tuhin's lawyer SM Shahjahan told this correspondent that his client, who is now is jail, will file an appeal with the Appellate Division of the SC challenging the HC verdict after receiving its full text.
