Teachers yesterday called a strike for Tuesday across all the public universities demanding revision of the proposed eight national payscale and a separate one for them.

No class and examination will be held on the day, they said. Prof Maksud Kamal, secretary general of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Association (FBUTA), declared the programme at a press conference at the capital's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

Earlier, the decision was taken from a general meeting of the representatives of teachers' associations of several public universities at Dhaka University Club in the morning.

Later, they held another meeting with vice chancellors of around 20 public universities in a conference room of BSMMU.

The teachers have been demonstrating since May 14 also demanding that the government equalise the salaries, benefits and status between university teachers and bureaucrats.

Equality should be brought between professors in selection grade and senior secretaries, and between professors and secretaries, they said, adding that the university teachers have to be included in the warrant of precedence.
