Gazipur city mayor sent to jail in bus torching case

Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Prof MA Mannan and nine others were sent to jail yesterday noon, following an order of senior Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Iqbal Masud.

They were arrested on Friday night over torching a bus in Chandona Chowrasta of Gazipur city the same day.

Sub-inspector Ahadul Islam of Joydebpur police filed a case naming 40 people including MA Mannan and accusing 30 other unknown people, of them, 11 are BNP-backed ward councillors of Gazipur City Corporation.

According to the prosecution, Mannan held a meeting with 150 leaders at his Salna residence the same day, planning subversive activities.

The nine arrestees are Mannan's brother Abdul Qadir, former BNP secretary general of Kaultia Union Abdul Khaliq Dealer, Rofiz Uddin, Shahin Alam, Habibullah, SM Akram, Sabdula Ali, Alam, and car driver Mizanur Rahman.
