Foul play suspected over trader's death
An unnatural death case was filed with the capital's Shahbagh Police Station yesterday centring the death of a trader whose family suspects that a police sub-inspector (SI) poisoned him over a dispute over investment.
Nur-e-Alam Azad Sourav died two and a half hours after being brought unconscious to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 4:30pm on Thursday by two unidentified men who fled, said Assistant Sub-inspector Sentu Chandra Das of the hospital's police outpost. An unidentified caller informed the family. DMCH sources said it
might have been due to poisoning. Sourav's brother Masum Hossain told The Daily Star that Sourav, also a Biman Bangladesh Airlines cabin crew, left his Mohammadpur residence on Thursday morning with Tk 2 lakh meant for SI Mahbubur Rahman of Gulshan Police Station.
Mahbubur had been demanding that Sourav return the Tk 13 lakh the former invested in the latter's cosmetic's shop in Pink City around one and a half months ago, said Masum, adding that Tk 2 lakh had already been returned.
Confirming this, the SI said Sourav never reached him with the money. If the autopsy report suggests foul play, the case will be converted to that of murder, Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar Siddique told The Daily Star.
