Don't stiff low income communities

Wasa officers urged at orientation

Field-level officers and staff of Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) should not discriminate while dealing with water supply problems of low income communities, said speakers at a programme in the capital yesterday.

They were addressing a two-day orientation organised for engineers and officers of four zones Wasa by Dushtha Shasthya Kendra (DSK) and Concerned Women for Family Development at The Daily Star Centre.

Dr Liakath Ali, director of Programmes and Policy Advocacy of WaterAid, said WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion) is a right which needs to be ensured.     

"Slum dwellers, especially women, face various kinds of problem in using toilets," he said, adding that scarcity of water is the main constraint for them.

Khalilur Rahman, director (finance) of Dhaka Wasa, said the orientation will help their officers and staff learn how to deal with people's sufferings in the area more efficiently.

 Deputy Managing Director of Wasa Sayed Golam Ahammad, among others, addressed the orientation on DWASA Services for Water Supply at Low Income Communities.
