DMCH fire: Another patient shifted from ICU dies

Star Digital Report

Another patient, who was shifted from Dhaka Medical College Hospital's intensive care unit after a fire broke out yesterday at the coronavirus-dedicated ICU, died this afternoon.

Momena Begum (45) died around 4:00pm today while undergoing treatment at the ICU of the DMCH burn unit, her nephew Md Parvez told The Daily Star.

Momena Begum's death brings the total number of deaths after patients were shifted to four, with three patients dying yesterday.

Parvez said his aunt's condition deteriorated after the fire broke out and she was shifted to the burn unit's ICU.

She was on life support at the ICU, he added.

AFM Ariful Islam Nabin, resident surgeon of the burn unit, also confirmed the death and that she was shifted from the Covid-19 ICU.

Nine patients, who were at the DMCH's ICU, were shifted to the burn unit's ICU, post-operative unit, and High Dependency Unit (HDU), hospital sources said.

Two of them remain on life support, they said.

Nineteen other patients who were at the hospital's post-CCU -- adjacent to the Covid-19 ICU -- were shifted to different wards at the hospital due to the fire yesterday.

Some have been transferred to different private hospitals in the capital, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Nur Hasan, the head of the four-member investigation committee of Fire Service and Civil Defence, today visited the ICU where the fire broke out.

Some ICU beds and some equipment of the beds, ceiling and other material were damaged in the fire, he said.

The committee members will visit on another day to see whether the extinguishers were used to douse the fire, the official added.
