Ctg Wasa to meet 70pc water demand by Oct: Officials
The construction of a water treatment plant, with a capacity of supplying 143 million litres per day (mld) to mitigate water crisis in Chittagong city, is expected to be completed by October this year, officials said.
Under "Karnaphuli Water Supply Project", financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), Bangladesh government and Chittagong Wasa, a new water reservoir will be installed at Nasirabad and the reservoir at Battali Hill will be modified, they said.
Two joint ventures from China and Japan and a Korean company are involved in implementing the project at a cost of Tk 1,510.18 crore, according to official records.
Of the amount, Jica is giving Tk 991 crore, while Tk 504 crore and Tk 15 crore are coming from the government's development project fund and Wasa respectively.
Currently, Wasa can supply 210-220 mld to the city dwellers covering 42 percent of water where the total demand is 500 mld.
After completion of the project, Wasa will be able to supply about 70 percent of the total demand, said Managing Director AKM Fazlullah.
