The returning officer (RO) yesterday directed the law enforcement agencies to take prompt action if deterioration of law and order situation is reported anywhere in Chittagong city centring about the upcoming city corporation vote.
"We urged them to work in the field, examine past records, and identify the risky places," RO Abdul Baten told a press conference after a meeting with the "coordination cell to maintain law and order" at EC's office on Jubilee Road.
Officials of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion, and intelligence agencies like DGFI were present.
"The law enforcement agencies assured us to take necessary steps to resist intrusion of criminals or terrorists from outside before and during election and conduct drives to recover illegal arms," said the RO.
Regarding deployment of army, he said such a situation was not created, but based on the reports of intelligence agencies, a decision would be taken later.
The chief election commissioner is scheduled to decide on deployment of army on April 19.
Baten urged the candidates not to violate the electoral rules during the celebration of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year, by giving gifts to the voters.
He said that as per the directives of the Election Commission, police had set up check posts at seven main entry points of the city and started watching important places by CCTV cameras.
Meanwhile, the RO yesterday sent show cause notices to two councillor candidates to explain in 48 hours why they have violated the electoral code of conduct.
Abudul Kader of Ward 28 erected bamboo arches, while Saleh Ahmed Chowdhury of Ward 41 used adhesive posters, both prohibited in the electoral rules.
