'BCL assaults' journo at CU

Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong University allegedly beat up a journalist yesterday.

Mizanur Rahman, CU correspondent of Chittagong city based newspaper Dainik Purbodesh, submitted a written complaint to the proctor.

Mizan, a second-year student of public administration, said BCL men led by Suruj and Rabin attacked him because he intervened in an altercation between his friend and the activists.

"The BCL men punched and kicked Mizan," said witness Shahidul Suman.

Mizan's friend Saddam Hossain, a student of marketing, quarrelled with the BCL men why they tried to jump a queue in front of Agrani Bank on the campus.

Proctor Mohammad Ali Asgar Chowdhury promised action against the culprits.

CU BCL President Md Alamgir Tipu said it was just a scuffle. "The accused BCL men apologised for the incident and we tried to settle the matter but Mizan refused," he said.

Mizan was treated at the university medical centre.
