Bangladeshis asked to keep business outlets closed
The Bangladeshi High Commission in Pretoria yesterday asked the Bangladeshi expatriates in South Africa to stay alert and keep their shops and business outlets closed until the ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals end.
It has also advised the Bangladeshis to contact the high commission at 0027-0123432105-7 (Telephone), 0027-12-0744871057 and 0027-12-0843262828 (mobiles), said a press release issued by the foreign ministry.
It also mentioned that no Bangladeshi was killed in the ongoing violence.
In the last one week, over 100 Bangladeshis were injured and 100 Bangladeshi shops were looted in Durban and Johannesburg, some of the victims told The Daily Star.
Currently, some 60,000 to 70,000 Bangladeshi expatriates are living in South Africa.
The riots are believed to be fuelled by widely-held beliefs that the country's economic woes are being caused by foreign nationals. Recently, the South African government decided to deploy army to contain the violence against the expatriates.
