Three students of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) were hacked allegedly by local youths during a clash with them at Nasirabad Housing Society in Chittagong city early yesterday.

The three students--Nahid Hasan, also organising secretary of CMC unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Aynul Hasan Anik, cultural secretary of CMC Central Students' Union and Zim--were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Police and locals said some residence students from two CMC dormitories at Nasirabad Housing Society had an altercation with some local youths over creating nuisance allegedly by the youths' taking drugs in front of the dormitories around 1:00am.

When the students of the dormitories protested the drug-taking incident, the youths locked in the clash with them, claimed Rashedul Islam, president of CMC unit BCL. At one stage, many other youths with sharp weapons joined them and attacked the students leaving the three injured, he said.

Mohiuddin Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, said hearing the altercation, many students from CMC main hostel, about 2km away from the two dormitories, rushed in and searched local youths in the alleys of the housing society that led to the clash. The three students were hacked when they were isolated from their group, he added.

CMC Principal Prof Selim Mohammad Jahangir said the CMC Academic Council at a meeting yesterday urged the law enforcement agencies to take legal action after investigation into the incident.
