The election to the 1,244 member posts reserved for women in 377 upazila parishads across the country was held almost peacefully yesterday, with mostly pro-Awami League candidate winning.

The election helps to complete formation of all upazila parishads for the first time in the country.

Meanwhile, supporters of two pro-AL mayor candidates clashed for occupying polling stations in Brahmanbaria municipality yesterday, injuring at least 15 people including a journalist.

The clash between the followers of Tofazzal Hossain, general secretary of Bancharampur upazila unit of Awami Jubo League, and Khalilur Rahman, ex-joint secretary of the upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, broke out at Jagannathpur Government Primary School.

After police intervention, the voting continued.

One of the injured persons was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Khalilur Rahman won the poll, said officials.

ELECTION TO RESERVED SEATS

In Kawkhali upazila of Pirojpur, AL leaders called all the voters at a place together and asked them to vote openly for the candidates chosen by them, our correspondent reported.

Besides, the Election Commission (EC) suspended  election to one seat in Habiganj sadar upazila due to complexities over ballot papers. The election to the posts of one chairman and two vice chairpersons in each of the country's 783 upazila parishads was held between February last year and early this year for the fourth time in Bangladesh.

But formation of the upazila parishads remained incomplete, as the member posts reserved for women were vacant.
