“Can prisoners of parties do that?”

This refers to the article, “Can prisoners of parties do that?” (July 20). If we are questioning MPs who do not enjoy unqualified independence in political parties they belong to, to hold judges accountable, then the natural question which comes to one's mind is to whom are  they accountable? Do citizens enjoy unqualified freedom to bring courts' functioning and judgements under scanner?

The legal system of any nation revolves around litigants and there should be separate laws for their protection. Independence of judiciary is public property, said one chief justice of the US Supreme Court. Recently, a judge in the US was brought in handcuffs in a court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. Judiciary in South Florida is known for nepotism and cronyism. Gone are the days when people were under the impression that judges are sacrosanct. To have public confidence in the judiciary, what is needed is transparency in working of courts and live telecast of courts' proceedings is a good way to bring in transparency. The issue is not that of judges vs politicians -- but that of transparency in the judiciary.
