JnU Journalists’ Alliance condemns attack on journalists during football match

Demands exemplary punishment for those responsible

The Jagannath University Journalists’ Alliance has expressed deep concern over an attack on journalists who were performing their professional duties during recent clashes surrounding the final match of the inter-departmental football tournament on the campus.

A joint statement in this regard was issued today, signed by Imran Hossain, president of the Jagannath University Journalists’ Association; Md Mehedi Hasan, president of the Jagannath University Press Club; and Jahangir Alam, president of the Jagannath University Reporters’ Unity.

The statement said the incident occurred on Thursday at the university’s central playground in Dhupkhola, where teachers, students and several on-duty journalists were injured.

It said journalists were deliberately targeted during the incident.

The Daily Star JnU correspondent Rakib Madber and daily Amar Desh correspondent Limon Islam sustained serious injuries in the attack and are currently undergoing treatment at hospital. Limon’s condition is critical, it added.

The alliance also placed five demands, including a proper, impartial and speedy investigation into the incident, and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
