Group stages sit-in at RU, demands recruitment of 'July movement participants'
Rajshahi University (RU) witnessed heightened tension on Monday as a group identifying itself as “July Chetona Bastobayon Committee” demanded the recruitment of “July movement participants” to various staff positions.
Around 60-70 members of the group staged a sit-in from morning in front of the administrative building and at different points on campus, centring their protest on the university’s syndicate meeting held today.
The group said those who actively participated in the July movement should be given employment opportunities based on merit, alleging that previous assurances from the administration were not implemented.
Tensions escalated when protesters entered the vice-chancellor’s office without permission.
The group later visited the office of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Main Uddin, where allegations of verbal threats were raised. However, the pro-VC clarified that there was no agenda or initiative regarding recruitment in the syndicate meeting.
Meanwhile, BNP-aligned teachers wrote to the University Grants Commission (UGC), urging it to intervene and halt any recruitment ahead of the election, alleging irregularities.
