Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan today announced his decision to resign.

“I have decided to step down from the position of vice-chancellor. I took charge on deputation at a time of crisis so that the university’s academic and administrative activities could continue without interruption,” he said at a press conference at the Abdul Motin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom at DU.

He said his role was primarily to stabilise the campus during a difficult phase and ensure that teaching, examinations and governance did not collapse.

“At that moment, the priority was to keep Dhaka University functioning. I believe that phase has now been overcome,” he added.

However, the vice-chancellor indicated that he would not leave abruptly, saying that a sudden vacancy at the top could affect the university’s normal operations.

“I will consider remaining in place until the next government takes over, so that there is no vacuum and the university’s routine work is not disrupted,” he said.

Prof Khan added that continuity in leadership was essential for managing admissions, examinations, budgetary decisions and administrative coordination at the country’s premier public university.

His announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about administrative restructuring at public universities following recent political and institutional changes.

University officials present at the briefing said further steps regarding the resignation and transition process would be communicated through official channels.
