Clashes reportedly erupted over argument on university bus

Jagannath University (JnU) authorities have suspended four students following a series of clashes between two groups on campus.

Among them, three are students of the marketing department and one of the political science department.

According to separate notices signed by the university's registrar, Prof Dr Gias Uddin, the four students were suspended last night based on the preliminary findings of an inquiry committee.

"The investigation committee, formed to probe today's [Tuesday's] untoward incident, has initially identified the accused. Their behaviour is deemed inconsistent with what is expected of university students and is against institutional discipline. Therefore, they have been suspended," the notice reads.

The suspended students are Md Sadi Hasan of political science department (2023–24 session), Abdullah Al Noman and Sami Uddin Sajid of the marketing department (2023–24 session), and Zahidur Rahman Jony of the marketing department (2020–21 session).

Earlier in the evening, the university administration formed a three-member committee to probe the incident.

The committee includes Prof Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin of the computer science and engineering department, Dr Mohammad Ali, assistant proctor and teacher of the botany department, and Nasir Ahmad, a teacher of the history department.

One of the committee members, seeking anonymity, said the suspension came after the accused were initially found responsible during the investigation.

At least 12 people, including several teachers, were injured in a clash between students of the marketing and political science departments at Jagannath University (JnU) yesterday.

The clashes reportedly broke out in three phases over an argument over talking loudly on a university bus.
