Bangladesh University holds 3rd Convocation
Farida Akhter, adviser to the ministry of fisheries and livestock, has urged students to practise responsible conduct, make informed choices and develop tolerant leadership, warning that political polarisation is harming the country’s education system.
She was speaking at the third convocation of Bangladesh University in Dhaka on Sunday, says a press release.
The ceremony was held at the Senaprangan Convention Hall in Dhaka Cantonment, where 5,903 students received degrees, including 5,224 undergraduates and 679 postgraduates.
In her speech, Farida Akhter said today’s students would become future administrators, teachers, doctors and policymakers, and stressed that meaningful national change requires institutional reform, not only individual effort. Referring to recent youth movements, she said young people must play an active role in shaping the principles and structure of state governance.
She also highlighted challenges in the fisheries and livestock sectors, citing pollution, wetland destruction and illegal fishing as major threats to fish stocks, and urged young people to avoid tobacco use and practise self-discipline.
The convocation began with recitation from the Holy Quran and the national anthem. Vice-chancellor Md Jahangir Alam delivered the welcome address, while degrees were conferred by the deans of the faculties.
University Grants Commission Chairman S M A Faiz said the nation placed high expectations on graduates to distinguish right from wrong with integrity and competence.
Gold medals and academic awards were presented to outstanding students, followed by a cultural programme marking the conclusion of the convocation.
