MCCI, BCI express condolences over Khaleda Zia’s demise

Two major trade bodies have expressed deep condolences over the passing of Khaleda Zia, a three-time prime minister of Bangladesh.

In a press release today, the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI), said, "Her demise marks the end of a significant chapter in Bangladesh's political history, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, resilience, and profound national impact."

Khaleda passed away on December 30 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital. She was 80. She was laid to rest beside her husband, former Bangladesh president Ziaur Rahman, the following day at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

The MCCI said that, as one of the most prominent political figures of independent Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia played a decisive role in shaping the nation's democratic trajectory.

"At a critical juncture following the restoration of parliamentary democracy, she assumed leadership with courage and conviction, guiding the nation through challenging political and economic transitions. Her leadership reflected an unwavering commitment to sovereignty, national dignity, and the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh," the MCCI said.

The leading trade body added that Khaleda demonstrated remarkable determination, personal sacrifice, and courage in the face of adversity throughout her political career.

"Her enduring engagement in national politics, despite many trials, stands as a testament to her dedication to public service and democratic governance."

In a separate statement today, the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) said the nation will remember Khaleda's role in expanding education, particularly women's education, and in creating a social safety net.

BCI President Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) said that during her tenure, the foundation of industrialisation laid through the introduction of a free-market economy and encouragement of the private sector helped strengthen Bangladesh's economy.

"With her death, the country and the nation have lost a dedicated patriotic leader."

Following Khaleda's demise, major trade bodies, including the FBCCI, DCCI, BGMEA, BKMEA, the Gazipur Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and the Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers & Dealers Association, also expressed condolences.
