The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza) have teamed up for a survey to assess the feasibility of an ocean front economic zone development project inside Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN).

The survey will also propose a financially viable design scheme under the public-private partnership model for the project, which has been proposed to Jica by Sojitz Corporation, a leading Japanese business group.

Japan has been working with the Beza to bring in more Japanese investment to Bangladesh and to establish Japanese economic zone, said Ito Naoki, Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh.

The envoy believes Japan will be able to play a vital role for the development of BSMSN.

He spoke at the document signing ceremony between Jica and Beza at InterContinental Dhaka on March 15.

"Jica is delighted to be a part of the initiatives to develop Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar. We hope Japanese businesses will come up with more investments for the BSMSN," said Hayakawa Yuho, chief representative of Jica's Bangladesh office.

Ahmad Kaikaus, principal secretary to the prime minister, and Paban Chowdhury, executive chairman of Beza, also attended the event.
