A director of the newly formed board of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) resigned yesterday citing inability to perform duties with dignity.

Syed M Tanvir, also managing director of Pacific Jeans Ltd, one of the country's leading garment exporters, had served as a director and vice-president of the CCCI for the 2019-2021 and 2021-2023 tenures respectively.

"…due to present unavoidable circumstances (in the CCCI), I feel that I will not be able to perform the responsibilities as director of CCCI for this tenure with dignity," he stated in the resignation letter.

Contacted by The Daily Star, Tanvir expressed unwillingness to elaborate on the reason behind his resignation.

He was one of the 24 directors announced to have been elected uncontested to the trade body's board for the 2023-25 tenure on August 6, the last day for submitting nomination papers, as exactly 24 candidates had vied for the 24 director posts.

Three presidium members were also elected unanimously in the first meeting of the newly elected directors on August 8 as there were no other contestants.

Omar Hazzaz, son of former CCCI president and local ruling party lawmaker MA Latif, was chosen as the new CCCI president.

Tarafder Md Ruhul Amin, managing director of Saif Powertech Ltd, and Raisa Mahbub, daughter of the outgoing CCCI president and newly elected FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam, were made senior vice president and vice president respectively.

Of the directors, one is Latif's youngest son Omar Muktadir.

Another, Mohammed Sazzadun Newaz, is the son of former CCCI senior vice president and chairman of CCCI election board Md Nurun Newaz.

Secretary to the CCCI Md Faruque confirmed that the latter was addressed to the CCCI president.

Informing that the letter was submitted after office hours, he said the resignation was yet to come into effect and the board of directors would take a decision on it later.

CCCI President Omar Hazzaz could not be reached on his phone for comment despite repeated attempts.
