The government appointed the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism Additional Secretary (Aviation and CA) Dr Humaira Sultana as managing director and chief executive officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

She becomes the first woman to hold the post in the national flag carrier’s 54-year history.

In an order issued today, the ministry said Humaira has been given additional responsibilities as MD and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited until further posting to the position.

The order also cancelled the contractual appointment of Dr Md Shafiqur Rahman, the airline’s immediate former CEO and MD, following his imprisonment in connection with criminal charges.

Police yesterday arrested Shafiqur Rahman and his wife in a case filed over the alleged abuse of an 11-year-old domestic worker.

The arrests followed a case filed by the victim’s father, a hotel employee, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Uttara West Police Station on Sunday.

A court later rejected their bail petitions and sent the arrestees to jail, said Sub-Inspector Romer Mia, the investigation officer.

Shafiqur Rahman was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on September 4, 2024.
