A court in Cox’s Bazar yesterday sent two youths to jail on charge of attempting to rape an Australian national in Himchhari area of Ramu upazila on Monday.

The accused are Aman Ullah, 25, and Abdul Gafur, 20, said police.

Abul Khayer, officer-in-charge of Ramu Police Station, said the two broke through the windows of a resort in Marine Drive area and entered the room of the Aussie tourist at night.

As they tried to rape the woman, she resisted and shouted, he said, adding that the youths fled the scene sensing trouble. The victim suffered some injuries.

The woman immediately informed Australian High Commission in Bangladesh about the incident.

On information, police went there and took her to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, and later took her back to the hotel under their protection, the OC said.

The law enforcers held five people, including a brother of the hotel owner, in the night. During interrogation, two of them confessed to attempting to rape the woman.

They were shown arrested in a case filed over the incident. The rest were released, said police.
