Lightning strike kills four of a family

Four members of a family died yesterday after being hit by lightning in Chandpur’s Boro Station area.

The dead are Waheda Begum, 65, her daughter Rehana Begum, 35, Rehana’s son Sabbir, 14, and Rehana’s daughter Samiya, 10.

Suja Ud Doula, resident medical officer of Chandpur Sadar Hospital, confirmed the reasoned behind the deaths.

Rehana’s sister Shahia Begum said a total of eight members of her family, all of whom hailed from Cumilla’s Chandina upazila, went on a recreational trip to Chandpur. Around 1:00pm, a thunderbolt struck and killed the four.

Nasim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Chandpur Model Police Station, said the bodies were handed over to family members after conducting autopsies at Chandpur Sadar Hospital morgue.

Meanwhile, Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Mazedur Rahman Khan handed over Tk 30,000 to the victims’ family for burial.
