Criminals attack JP MP Yahya

Star Report

Criminals attacked the vehicle carrying Yahya Chowdhury, a Jatiya Party lawmaker of Sylhet-2, in Burunga area of Osmaninagar upazila on Saturday night.

The MP was returning home after visiting a local union parishad chairman when he was attacked around 11:00pm. Criminals attacked the vehicle with stones and brick chunks. In response, the lawmaker fired shots in the air, said SM AL Mamun, officer-in-charge of Osmaninagar Police Station.

No one was injured as the attackers fled the scene. They could not be identified, he added.

Although the JP leader got the Awami League-led alliance's nomination to contest the upcoming December 30 national election, some local AL men have been protesting his nominations as they wanted a party candidate instead.

Meanwhile in Jamalpur, at least 10 people were injured in a clash between AL and BNP activists at the district's Sarishabari upazila around 11:00pm on Saturday.

The clash erupted at a Baul concert when AL men began chanting slogans against the BNP. During the clash, three motorbikes were torched, three shops were vandalised, and a chase and counter-chase took place, said locals and witnesses.

Mazedur Rahman, OC of Sarishabari Police Station, said they were investigating the incident.
