Four held for attack on DU VC's house

Police yesterday arrested four people for their alleged involvement in carrying out vandalism on the residence of Dhaka University vice-chancellor.

The law enforcers also claimed to have recovered two mobile phones stolen during the attack from their possession.

The four are Rakibul Hasan, 26, Masud Alam, 25, Ali Hossain Sheikh, 28, and Abu Sayed Fazle Rabbi alias Siam, 20, said a press release of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

“In primary interrogation, they came to know that none of them are students of Dhaka University. Only Masud is a student of Dhaka Alia Madrasa, while the rest are not students,” said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP. 

Of the arrestees, Rakibul stands accused in five cases filed with different police stations in Barisal and Laxmipur, he told The Daily Star.

A team of DB police of DMP (South) arrested the four in the capital's Chankharpul area around 1:00pm yesterday, he said.

Police then produced them before a Dhaka court with a seven-day remand prayer. The court granted a four-day remand for Rakibul, a three-day for Ali, a two-day each for Masud and Sayed, said police.

On April 9 night, a group of unidentified people wearing masks carried out the vandalism at the residence of DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman during the demonstration for reforms in the quota system of government jobs.

On the next day, the DU authorities formed a five-member committee to probe the incident. On that day, a DU security official filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station against many unknown people over carrying out the mayhem at the house of DU vice-chancellor.
