Cop's body recovered from river

Body of a police constable was recovered yesterday about 21 hours after he had jumped into the Kaliganga river in Manikganj to catch a fugitive.

Divers from the fire service's Dhaka unit recovered the body of Shahinur Rahman from the river in Joynagar area around 1:30pm, said Rifat Rahman Shamim, superintendent of police in the district.

Shahinur, son of Wahidur Rahman of Gohailbari village in Ashulia upazila of Dhaka, was posted at Manikganj Sadar Police Station.

According to his elder brother Shamim Hossain, Shahinur joined the police department in 2006. He left his wife Jhuma Akhter, who has been expecting for six months, and six-year-old son Sajim.

Officer-in-Charge of Manikganj Sadar Police Station Rokibuzzaman confirmed the incident. He said Shahinur and Assistant Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam went to Purbagilonda village in Ghior upazila around 5:30pm to arrest Abdus Salam, a convict in a drug case.

After the arrest, Salam on way to the police station suddenly jumped into the river and Shahinur followed him risking his life.

But, both the constable and the convict went missing in the river.

After 21 hours of the incident, five divers from Dhaka recovered the body of the constable.

Salam was still missing, said Mizanur Rahman, deputy assistant director of Manikganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.
