A football fan in Rajshahi passed away after he suffered from a heart attack while celebrating Marcos Rojo's 86th minute score against Nigeria that advanced Argentina to Round 16 of the World Cup in Russia's Saint Petersburg yesterday.

The tragic incident happened as Argentine fans across the globe celebrated the country's move into the next round of the World Cup.

Mohammad Selim, 45, a fish trader from Moholdarpara was watching the game at Sagarpara intersection where Rajshahi City Corporation arranged a large screen for locals to watch World Cup matches

“He was watching the match with many of us,” Monirul Islam, a local said, adding that Selim was sitting in the front while he was at the back.

“When Rojo scored, Selim along with many of us jumped up cheering,” Monirul said,“And then he just collapsed while cheering.”

Selim was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead, said police official Shamim.

His body has been handed over to his wife and he was buried at Tikapara graveyard yesterday. A large number of locals attended his funeral.

He is survived by his wife and only daughter.

Football legend Diego Maradona reportedly also became ill while celebrating Argentina's victory over Nigeria the same night.
