One killed over property dispute

The dead Kafiluddin Ahmed, an employee of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), had a dispute with his family for several months, said his brother Amin Uddin.

Kafil's brother-in-law Ataullah Mondal said he received a phone call from Kafil at 1:30am yesterday and asked him to come to his house immediately as Kafil's wife and daughter had been beating him.

Reaching Kafil's house in half an hour, Ataullah told the reporters, he found him dead.

Kafil, who underwent an open-heart surgery recently, bore injuries in the head, chest and hand, sources said.

Amin Uddin filed a murder case with Joydevpur Police Station accusing Kafil's wife Jobeda Begum, a teacher of Joydevpur Government Girls' High School, his daughter Shirin Afroz and son-in-law Shamim Ahmed.

Jobeda had long been pressing Kafil to hand over the ownership of the land and house at Chhayabithi to her and their daughter Shirin.

Following pressure, Kafil even divorced Jobeda on April 2, and later settled the matter through a family meeting but the feud continued as he filed several GDs (general diaries) with Joydevpur Police Station in different dates.

The officials of Chhayabithi House Builders Association said Kafil filed an application to hand over the property to his wife and daughter on March 22, but after three days he cancelled the application saying they forced him to file the petition.
