Spain readies first group of S Asians for deportation

By Afp, Madrid
Spanish authorities on Saturday began preparing to deport a group of more than 200 Pakistani and Indian migrants found adrift off the southern coast this week, transferring a third of them to Madrid to be flown home.

The rest of the 223 South Asians intercepted Saturday near Cadiz, barring two minors who are being considered disaster survivors rather than illegal immigrants, will be repatriated via Madrid "in the coming hours", regional authorities said.

The migrants' 30-meter (100-foot) vessel had sailed from the Gulf of Guinea region of west Africa and was apparently preparing to pass eastward through the Strait of Gibraltar when it was discovered off the coast of Chipiona by a fishing vessel.
