6,000 violent deaths in Baghdad since Jan
Baghdad's main mortuary has received the bodies of nearly 6,000 people since the start of this year, most of whom have died violently, the BBC in London said Tuesday, quoting government figures.
The corporation said the monthly death toll has increased from just over 1,000 in January to nearly 1,400 in May but the actual numbers were likely to be higher as many bodies are not taken to the morgue or are never found.
Most bodies are believed to be those of civilians caught up in the spiral of sectarian violence and have since been buried in unmarked graves, it added, citing government officials who requested anonymity.
