Bangladeshi chef moves to regain place in record book

A Bangladeshi-origin curry chef in the West Midlands of England was attempting yesterday to regain a place in the record books by rustling up a 10-tonne chicken tikka masalla.

Vast quantities of chicken, spices and curry powder were prepared in advance to be "poured" into a specially-made curry pot by Abdul Salam, owner of the Eastern Eye restaurant in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

"I was pleased with my three-tonne curry in 2000, but I want this record to stand for tens, if not hundreds of years," Salam said.

Whatever the outcome, portions of the curry -- the highlight of Lichfield's annual festival -- were to be sold to raise money for a Bangladesh-based charity.
