SMS spider will weave your web

Syed Tashfin Chowdhury
SMS Spider, the latest service offered by GrameenPhone, has made web page building easier and extremely efficient for over 3.5 million GP subscribers of the nation.

Developed by Inforev Limited, the service incorporates cell-email technology with web building techniques.

"The idea is to make a Netizen out of every single GP subscriber, without using a computer or the internet," said Mujtaba Sattar, managing director and Chief Executive Officer of Inforev Limited.

In order to begin the Real-time web building process, a subscriber has to register his name, through SMS to 2233.

A confirmation of the registration will be sent back to the user and also prompt him to set the name, under which he would like to create the web page. The confirmation of the web page name will be sent back in a few seconds and prompt the user for the next information that he would want to add to his page.

Thus, if the name of the user is 'Shahed', he can have the following web address: www.shahed.cellemail.net.

"The user can continue providing information as prompted in this way and pretty soon, the web page will be done building the general profile of the user," informed Sattar.

Besides the general profile, a Personal and Professional profile of the user can also be easily built in the same way.

An ancillary service connected to this service is the Electronic Curriculum Vitae (CV). Through this service, an user can SMS the email address, where he would want his CV to be emailed, which was generated from the already existing professional and personal profile information in the user's web page.

Through the information being provided by users in their page, a database is being created which will, in turn, be used for future services to be offered like 'Match Making' and also 'Job Search'.

"GP will possibly launch 'Yellow pages' SMS service as well in a few months time," said Sattar.

SMS Spider, and all other sms based services, developed by Inforev Limited, uses the Short messages Peer to Peer (SMPP) concept.

Inforev Limited commercially introduced the sms email concept to Bangladesh through the Cell Email service launched by GP, last year.

Currently, most of the SMS services are available to subscribers of GrameenPhone, Djuice, BanglaLink and CityCell.

Some services from GP's Cell Email, SMS Chat, Sixers, HSC result Dissemination, Infotainment, SMS Eid card etc have been extremely popular.

BanglaLink subscribers had the SMS Email, SMS Adda, Habib's favorite track contest and other similar services.

Ringtone services and HSC result dissemination was also provided through CityCell to their subscribers.

"Currently, over 64 such sms services have been offered or are yet to be offered by these operators," said Sattar.

Inforev Limited, initiated in 1989, primarily provided software-based solutions. Along with the automation of Hotel Purbani and Ashraf Textile Mills, the firm is responsbile for the official Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology (MOSICT) web site.

The firm focused toward SMS services in early 2003, when the Cell Email concept and the total software architecture for the concept was developed by Mujtaba Sattar and his colleagues.
