ICT minister meets BIJF members
ICT the Bangla way

As part of the fortnightly programme observing the International Mother Language Day, a seminar on the role and importance of ICT in mother language was held at the conference hall of Bangladesh National Commission for Unesco (BNCU) on February 19, says a press release.

M Osman Farruk, minister for education and chairman of BNCU chaired the programme while Ichiro Miazaoa, programme specialist, Unesco Dhaka office attended the function as special guest. Professor Khalilur Rahman, director general, National Academy for Educational Management (NAEM), national coordinator of ASPNET presided over the function.

The education minister said though Bangladesh is a small country, it is full of cultural diversity and has its own cultural identity. "We have to project it before the world through different media." He also highlighted the importance of ICT in the development of mother language.

Abdul Wahed Tamal, technical editor, Monthly Computer Jagat and M Akhteruzzaman, grand jury, World Summit on Information Society presented individual papers on the role and importance of ICT on mother language.

Different publications, books and CDs in Bangla were also put on display. A good number of visitors mostly students attended the seminar.


ICT minister meets BIJF members

Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, minister for science and ICT met the members of Bangladesh ICT Journalist Forum (BIJF) at the ministry's conference room for exchanging views on February 23.

Khan urged the ICT journalists to uphold positive aspects of the sector and assured support to the forum for its role in development of ICT sector.

He requested the BIJF members to give proper exposure to the government and ongoing activities to flourish the ICT sector. The minister said the BIJF members would be kept informed about major developments in the sector following important policy-level programmes at home and abroad.

The minister agreed to extend whole-hearted support for creating a platform comprising BIJF, Government, NGO and ICT associations and trade bodies on the issue of post WSIS (World Summit on Information Society held in Geneva) awareness in the country.

Among others, Ahmedul Islam Babu, president and M A Haque Anu general secretary of BIJF spoke at the discussion.


Telemedicine seminar at AUB

A seminar on telemedicine was held at the Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB) on February 17, says a press release.

President of Japan Bangladesh Society of Japan Dr Sheikh Aleemuzzaman conducted the seminar while it was presided over by Vice-chancellor of AUB Prof Abul Hasan M Sadeq. Dr Masahiko Sugitani and Dr Noriko Kinukawa, two professors from Nihon University, Japan, also participated the session as discussants.

In his keynote paper, Aleemuzzaman said telemedicine can provide good health care facilities through the internet. He categorised telemedicine into two sections -- telemedicine between two fully computerised medical facilities and telemedicine between a medical facility and a home having internet connection. In the telemedicine system of treatment it is not necessary for a patient to go to the hospital in person. He can contact a doctor and get his advice through the internet. A special software developed by Gemx Co., Japan is widely being used for the purpose.

For example, he mentioned, Japan Bangladesh Hospital, a net hospital based in Khulna city, where services like outpatient treatment, pathology, X-ray, ECG and Ultrasonogram are available through the internet.

The Nihon University professors assured the AUB vice-Chancellor of assistance in establishing a medical faculty at the AUB in the near future.


Seminar on animation and internet at MIU

A seminar on animation and internet technologies was held at the seminar room of Manarat International University (MIU), Gulshan on February 17. The seminar was organised by Arena Multimedia, Gulshan center.

Zakir Hossain, executive director, Arena Multimedia, Gulshan Centre, Sazzad Hossain, acting head, CSC department, Abul Bashar Khan, registrar, and Prof M Umar Ali, vice chancellor of MIU were present on the seminar.

The speakers at the event discussed different technical aspects and career prospects in the field of animation and internet. A detailed overview of their total course curriculum was also revealed along with their professional prospects.

The programme came to an end with a raffle draw amongst the seminar participants.

InfoUni launches first international centre at Dhaka

InfoUni India launched their training centre in Bangladesh in collaboration with @it Online, a local company on February 18. The inauguration ceremony was held at the VIP lounge of the Press club.

InfoUniv started its operations in Kolkata in 2000 and have over 100 training centres operating all over India at present. It was also the first institute to launch CCNA courses in India.

The ceremony started off with the welcome address by Shorab Shabbir, chief executive officer, @it online. Rana Lahiri, manager, InfoUniv, India and Nazrul Islam, system analyst, National Data Bank and AHM Sultanur Reza, district general manager, Grameenphone were also present.

With this joint venture, @it Online will be training students in certification courses by Microsoft, Linux, Redhat, Cisco and many more.
