Discussants at the Bangladesh Development Gateway Foundation (BdDGF)
IT is possible for a common web portal to eradicate poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality; reduce child and maternal mortality; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB, and other diseases and ensure environmental sustainability. To implement these, all concerned bodies in Government and private organisations should work together on a common platform. This was told in a round table discussion on 'The Role of ICT and Country Portal in the Development Sector' organised by Bangladesh Development Gateway Foundation (BdDGF) on December 31 at its own premises, says a press release. Many local ICT personnel joined the discussion. They expressed their opinions based on post World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) and talked about our responsibilities to develop an Information Society. BdDGF has developed a web portal www.bangladeshgateway.org in this regard.

Sabur Khan, managing director, Daffodil Computers Ltd, Abu Sayeed Khan, telecom expert, Azhar H Chowdhury, director, CITech Communications Ltd, Akhteruzzaman, president, Bangladesh Multimedia Society, Mohaymen Farhad, project manager, Grameen Telecom, Shahid Uddin Akbar, coordinator, ICT for Development Program, Abdul Hakim, secretary, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), Reza Salim, associate director, Bangladesh Friendship Education Society, Farida Aktar, program officer, BCDJC, Syed Ziaul Habib, officer, The Hunger Project, Harisuzzaman, deputy director, Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and Mesbah Uddin from ICTDP were the discussants of the round table. Habiba Tasneem Chowdhury, executive director, BdDGF was the moderator of the discussion.

The discussants said that this common web portal may publish all the documents, books and curriculum of primary education online so that all the educational institutions in Thana level can login to this portal and get access to them immediately. It was also said that the medical sector can be benefited from portal. It can help the doctors all over the Bangladesh to get the updates on the latest development in medical sector. This portal can also reduce the controversy over different data, information between the Government and NGO. People of different walks of our society will get all types of information from the portal. The discussants also expressed that they should build up a strong network to make all the information of this web portal regularly updated. For this, all the discussants signed an accord with BdDGF. This portal will act in strengthening access to public domain information.
