FM goes to Singapore, Philippines to strengthen ties

Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan left Dhaka last night on a four-day official visit to Singapore and the Philippines.

He has gone there at the invitation of the foreign ministers of those countries.

According to sources in the foreign ministry, the main objective of the visit is to promote and strengthen bilateral relations with them.

This is the first visit by the foreign minister to those countries after the present government came to power.

During his stay in Singapore, Morshed Khan will hold official talks with his counterpart S Jayakumar.

He is also expected to meet the prime minister, ministers of trade and investment and acting minister for manpower.

Morshed Khan will also deliver a lecture on "Look towards east policy" of the government at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies of Singapore.

A high level business delegation led by Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Abdul Awal Mintoo will also visit Singapore at the same time.

Morshed Khan will address the Singapore businessmen at an investment seminar on business opportunities in Bangladesh.

From Singapore, the foreign minister will go to Manila on Thursday.

He will meet his counterpart Blas F Ople.

The foreign minister is also scheduled to call on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
