UN urged to help ensure world peace

UNB, Dhaka
Speakers at a discussion yesterday underscored the unique role of the UN in the promotion of world peace, international understanding and in the resolution of conflicts and disputes between states.

There was no alternative to the UN as it offered the best hope to ensure survival of mankind on earth, they said.

The LIFE, a UN-associated NGO, organised the meeting in the city to mark the United Nations Day, with its Chairman Kamrul Islam Sony in the chair.

"The UN has never faced a greater challenge in the long 58 years of its existence. Its credibility and credentials as an institution of veneration have never been put to a greater test by the tragic and traumatic events that have been unfolding on the world stage," said Amanullah Khan, chairman of UNB and advisor to the LIFE.

He emphasised the need to build a milieu of tolerance, understanding and goodwill among all the states as a means to prevent escalation of the crisis and defuse simmering tension that threatened world peace and security.

Sheikh Farukh Ahmed, president of Solidarity Bangladesh, Monir Hussain Tutul, Amirul Islam Babu and Saleh Shibly also spoke.
