60 injured in Gopalganj clashes

At least 60 people were injured in clashes at Nizra and Charpathalia villages under Gopalganj Sadar upazila yesterday.

At Nizra village, two rival groups -- one led by Noor Kabir Shaikh and the other by Yahia Khan -- clashed over establishing supremacy, leaving 25 injured, police and witnesses said.

Both the groups used iron rods, machetes and sticks during the clash.

Seven seriously injured people -- Dildar Shaikh, 39, Ashraful Shaikh, 45, Ukil Mollah, 26, Mokaram Shaikh, 35, Sahajahan Mollah, 45, Rajesh Khan, 17, and Abdar Khan, 25, -- were admitted to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital.

At Charpathalia village, two groups of villagers were locked in a bloody clash following a collision between two engine boats in the Madhumati river.

Thirty-five people were injured in the clash and eight of them were admitted to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital and different clinics.

They are Babu, 25, Kuti Mia, 23, Saidul Islam, 40, Moshtak, 32, Abul, 45, Mahamud, 30, Rafique, 22, and Liton, 25.

Two separate cases were lodged with Gopalganj thana.
