Star-Viqarunnisa English debate contest opens

Organised by the Viqarunnisa Noon Debating Club and sponsored by The Daily Star, the debating contest will begin at the college auditorium today.
The theme of this year's contest is 'World peace' and the slogan is 'When the power of love overcomes the love of power, we will have peace'.
Debaters from 10 schools and 16 debating clubs will take part in the seven-day contest.
Professor Mohammad Junaid, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Dhaka, formally inaugurated The Daily Star-Viqarunnisa Noon Debating Club Third English Debate Championship-2003.
He said English debate is very important for the students as it helps improve their English and prepare themselves to face global challenge.
The competition would enhance students' analytical power, promote team spirit and encourage them to make greater effort to understand social issues, Prof. Junaid said.
Speaking as special guest, Establishment Manager of The Daily Star AFM Jamaluddin said debate helps students become good communicators, public relations officers and teachers who would build a better Bangladesh.
The Daily Star will continue its contribution to the English debate competition in Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, he said.
Principal of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College and Chief Patron of Viqarunnisa Noon Debating Club Rowena Hossain presided over the ceremony.
Mowrin Mahbuba Moyen, president of the Viqarunnisa Noon Debating Club, also spoke at the ceremony.
