The Chittagong University Teachers' Association (CUTA) yesterday observed a two-hour work abstention on the campus protesting the University Grant Commission's (UGC) proposals for the appointment of teachers and employees, and their promotion in public universities.

The work abstention programme began at 9.00am and continued till 11.00am.

Earlier in an emergency general meeting on Friday, the CUTA strongly condemned the proposals of the UGC.

When contacted, CUTA General Secretary Md Helal Uddin Nizami told The Daily Star that the UGC has no right to make such proposals.

"Under the existing act of 1973, only the syndicate and the senate of the university concerned have the right to take decision in these respects," he added.

Helal Uddin said there were three officers among the six-member UGC committee.

"How the officers can take decision regarding the appointment of university teachers?" he questioned.
