Three architects received the Berger Young Architects' Award-2003 at the award giving ceremony at Sonargaon Hotel on Saturday.

The award was given in two categories -- industrial and special.

Jami-Al-Shafi and Farid Uddin Ahmed jointly won the award in special category for their project 'Rayerbazar Badhyabhumi Smritisoudha', a memorial to the martyred intellectuals in Dhaka.

In industrial category, Lela Isabela Qyma won the award for her project 'FS Sweaters Limited', a factory located at Maona near Bhaluka.

The Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited in association with the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) introduced the award this year.

Speaking on the occasion, Managing Director of Berger Paints Masih-Ul-Karim said this award would inspire the young architects to devote themselves more to their profession.

The competition will be held every two years, he added.

Mobassher Hossain, chairman of IAB, called on the young architects to pay attention to the environmental impact and the needs of the physically challenged people while designing buildings.

Mazharul Islam, a pioneer architect in Bangladesh, handed over the crests to the winners and Masih-Ul-Karim gave away certificate and a cheque for Tk 50,000 to each winner.

A total of 18 projects were submitted for the competition and a five-member jury committee led by eminent architect Rabiul Hussain selected the winners.
