Police foil AL hartal at Galachipa
Sources said police went on action on Sunday night by resorting to baton charges on AL activists and arresting more than thirty of them to create panic among the organisers.
Police and alliance cadres also forced the shop owners to open their shops in the morning.
The hartal was called as the alliance cadres and police prevented the local AL leaders and workers to hold a rally at the local municipal ground on Sunday afternoon.
The rally was organised to protest the ransacking of local AL office by alliance cadres on October 10 while celebrating the two years' of BNP-led alliance government. They also set fire to the office.
Due to forcible occupation of the venue, the rally could not be held. At least eight AL workers were injured in the clashes, one of them seriously.
They also held Khandaker Mohammad Jahangir MP, and district AL leader Kashinath Dutta hostage at the local rest house. They went there to take part in the rally.
However, after a short gathering on the rest house premises, a daylong hartal programme was given for Monday.
